Fabrication of yttrium-iron garnet using a front-loading hot-press furnace

The construction of a simple hot-press furnace designed for reliability, economy and operational versatility is described. The furnace is used to prepare high-density yttrium-iron garnet (YIG) by the proper combination of presintering and hot-pressing conditions. Garnets prepared by hot-pressing pos...

Summary:The construction of a simple hot-press furnace designed for reliability, economy and operational versatility is described. The furnace is used to prepare high-density yttrium-iron garnet (YIG) by the proper combination of presintering and hot-pressing conditions. Garnets prepared by hot-pressing possess excellent microstructure and may approach zero porosity. High density and homogeneous/fine grain size may be readily obtained. 12 refs.
