Summary:New glass compositions were investigated in the Ba-, I- and Ga-based glass system (BIG) using XRD, DTA and DSC. Radioactive Th was completely removed and replaced by Gd, and these new glasses were stabilised by substituting Ba by alkali ions. Characteristic temperatures Tg, Tx and Tl, and the Hruby factor, Hr, were determined for each glass. The most significant critical cooling rates, Rc, are also given: both the highest Hr and the lowest Rc values for BIG Th-free glasses were obtained by coupling two alkali ions. Some attempts were also made to replace Th by Ce(IV), leading to Ce(III)- containing glasses. The synthesis of Ce(IV)-containing fluoride glasses seemed to be impossible. Nevertheless, CeF4 has been synthesised, the knowledge of its lattice parameters being improved. 13 refs.
