Synthesis of NiFe2O4 in the presence of fluorine

Ferrite formation in compacts of NiO-Fe2O3 mixture was studied at 700-1100C. The effect of fluoride was studied by placing these compacts on top of green AlF3 compacts during firing. On the basis of results it is concluded that F- ions originating via the gas phase replace O2- ions thus causing cati...

Summary:Ferrite formation in compacts of NiO-Fe2O3 mixture was studied at 700-1100C. The effect of fluoride was studied by placing these compacts on top of green AlF3 compacts during firing. On the basis of results it is concluded that F- ions originating via the gas phase replace O2- ions thus causing cation vacancies which in turn enhance ferritization and retard densification. Slower densification in turn acts against ferritization. These opposing effects explain why AlF3 augments ferritization at lower temperatures but retards it at higher temperatures. 3pp 3fig 1tab
