Ion clustering and crystallization of sol-gel-derived erbium silicate glass

The clustering of erbium ions in binary glass of Er2O3-SiO2 derived from alkoxides was revealed at low concentrations under TEM. A third component, such as Al2O3, was effective in declustering erbium. The solubility of erbium in this binary glass sintered at 1100 C for 6 h was around 5.0 mol%. Sinte...

Summary:The clustering of erbium ions in binary glass of Er2O3-SiO2 derived from alkoxides was revealed at low concentrations under TEM. A third component, such as Al2O3, was effective in declustering erbium. The solubility of erbium in this binary glass sintered at 1100 C for 6 h was around 5.0 mol%. Sintered glass with erbia concentration less than 5 mol% was X-ray amorphous. The devitrification tendency of Er2O3-SiO2 increased with the erbia concentration. 8 refs.
