Summary:The probabilistic conditions of homogeneous and heterogeneous solidification of metals have been determined on the basis of a combined thermodynamic and statistical approach. The joint influence of the size of the insoluble impurity particle and the edge angle of impurity wetting by the solid phase on the solidification type has been taken into account for the first time. New (dimensionless) criteria for solidification are proposed.
