Summary:A new 3-D nonlinear model of chatter vibration in turning process is presented in this paper. The workpiece is modeled as a rotating clamped-free beam which is excited by cutting forces. π -Buckingham theory is used to extract dimensionless parameters for this problem. Using these parameters, non-dimensional equations of motion are developed. An approximate analytical solution of the nonlinear problem is obtained. A study of the influence of different parameters on the stability results is developed. Using these results, turning velocity intervals for stable and unstable cuts are determined.
