Summary: | During his tenure with NCASI, Dr. Lucier encouraged devel- opment and support for watershed-scale research to investigate the effectiveness of modern forestry best management practices (BMPs) for protection of water quality and aquatic communities. Research in the West also has revealed that: (i) topog- raphy has a significant influence on northern spotted owl habitat use; (ii) owls occupy managed forests in which they can have positive popula- tion growth rates; and (iii) in fire- prone forests, active silviculture can play an important role in maintaining suitable habitat conditions and reduc- ing the risk from uncharacteristic wildfires. |
