Summary:Since the early 1950s many techniques and approaches have been developed to examine the facilities planning problem. That such diversified techniques as schematic and systematic, optimizing and heuristic, interactive graphics/integrated approach, graph theory-based approach, knowledge-based approach, and fuzzy set theory-based approach exist attests to the research community's intent to solve the problem more efficiently. Owing to the complexity of layout designs and the deficiency of simple noninteractive procedures for solving the problem, interactive procedures have gained considerable momentum in the past few years. This paper surveys the work done to date on the problem of layout designs, with emphasis on interactive decision-making processes, and discusses the implications of human decision making on this human/computer interaction.
