Summary:Tye focuses on Julian Hawthorne inscriptions in the Library of James Carleton Young. A series of seven unique Julian Hawthorne inscriptions are held in the Special Collections of the University of Nebraska at Kearneys library. The son of Nathaniel Hawthorne, the younger Hawthorne was a novelist and journalist with a varied and long literary career. These inscribed volumes originated in the library of Minneapolis land magnate and book collector James Carleton Young. At the turn of the twentieth century. Young amassed a library of inscribed books from the leading authors of his lifetime. The existence of Young's library was known to contemporaries, but its holdings were, and remain, subject of speculation. Young was "very sensitive to any publicity in regard to his literary collection," according to an account of the library in the Cornell College alumni magazine.
