Summary:A method for mass spectrometric gas analysis based on the ionization of neutrals by ion/molecule reactions is presented. In contrast to electron impact ionization, ion/molecule reactions usually avoid fragmentation of the reactant gases. Therefore gas analysis with ion/molecule reactions strongly diminish the constraints of conventional mass spectrometric methods caused by the overlap of break up patterns and thus on-line measurements are possible even for the analysis of complex gas mixtures.
