Summary:Modernization and optimization of existing coal-fired power plants offers a route to reduced emissions and fuel consumption as well as increased efficiency. Options for increasing the efficiency of conventional coal-fired power systems are identified. Elements of retrofitting, refurbishment, rehabilitation, upgrading, and repowering are explained, as are factors to consider in securing project financing. The merits of advanced coal-based systems, such as integrated gasification combined cycles and pressurized fluidized bed combustion, are also discussed.
