Summary:•A novel approach to fabricate micron-scale porous titanium was developed.•A surface-layered porous structure dispersing with AgNPs was obtained on TA1.•The microstructure of the porous structure and the AgNPs were characterized.•The TA1 matrix maintains the structural integrity and its original properties. This study reports an interesting phenomenon that a micron-scale porous structure was fabricated on the surface of a grade 1 commercially-pure Ti (TA1) when a brazing wetting experiment of pure Ag was conducted in high vacuum. Especially, a large number of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were formed dispersing on the surfaces of the pores. The microstructure characteristics and chemical compositions of the porous structure were characterized in detail. Based on the above findings, a novel method has been successfully developed for fabricating a micron-scale porous structure on the surface of TA1. The present findings provide a new strategy for the design or surface modification of advanced porous Ti materials.
