A single crystal of MgAlB4 compared with polycrystalline Mg1−xAlxB2 with x near 0.5

We report on the structure and resistivity of a mm size MgAlB4 single crystal (SC). The structure determined from SC X-ray diffraction is in very good agreement with that reported by Margadonna et al. [Phys. Rev. B 66 (2002) 14518]. The resistivity of the SC exhibited a Bloch-Gruneisen-like temperat...

Summary:We report on the structure and resistivity of a mm size MgAlB4 single crystal (SC). The structure determined from SC X-ray diffraction is in very good agreement with that reported by Margadonna et al. [Phys. Rev. B 66 (2002) 14518]. The resistivity of the SC exhibited a Bloch-Gruneisen-like temperature dependence and showed no transition to superconductivity down to 4.5 K. We report also on the structure, temperature dependence of resistivity and thermo-power of polycrystalline Mg1-xAlxB2 with x around 0.5, prepared for comparison.
