Summary:The present paper presents an original contribution to the detection and quantification of cutting vibration in the surface profiles produced on hardened steel parts using CBN tools. Several machined surfaces with the Ra parameter ranging from 0.05 µm to 0.3 µm produced by feed rates of 0.05-0.1 mm/rev are analyzed using the FFT signal processing technique. Both recorded and simulated surface profiles along with relevant force records are processed in terms of the frequency characteristics estimated from the PSD spectra. A methodology for the comparison of the process and surface outputs leading to the detection of surface profile deteriorations caused by cutting vibration is proposed.
