Summary:Epoxidation of alkenes is one of the most explored reactions in organic synthesis because of the accessibilities of diverse important compounds from epoxides. Several transition-metal catalysts, in combination with oxidizing agents, have been successfully utilized to achieve alkene epoxides. In this context, methyltrioxorhenium (MTO)-catalyzed epoxidation of alkenes in accordance with different oxidants has been widely reconnoitred where the Lewis acidity of rhenium (Re) is diminished by different Lewis bases to suppress the decomposition of epoxides to diols. Although great success has been accomplished, no review article on MTO-catalyzed epoxidation has been published to date. Therefore, all the advancements in methyltrioxorhenium (MTO)-catalyzed epoxidation of alkenes using different oxidizing agents (aq. H 2 O 2 , urea-H 2 O 2 , and sodium percarbonate) have been summarized in this comprehensive review article for the scientific community. Epoxides are biologically important moiety that is also used as synthetic intermediates. This review aims to present the up-to-date advancements in methyltrioxorhenium (MTO)-catalyzed epoxidation of alkenes using diverse oxidizing agents.
Bibliography:Ms Asha Joshi was born in 1993 in Uttarakhand, India. She obtained her BSc degree from DSB Campus (Nainital) in 2013 and MSc in Chemistry from PNGPG College (Ramnagar) in 2015. Since 2018, she is pursuing her PhD under the supervision of Dr Saroj Ranjan De at the Dept. of Chemistry, National Institute of Technology, Uttarakhand as Institute Fellow. Her research interest is focused on transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation reactions.
Dr Jawahar L. Jat completed his MSc and PhD in Organic Chemistry from M. L. Sukhadia University, Udaipur, India. He worked with Jubilant Chemsys Ltd, Noida for three years (2007-2010), after which he did his postdoctoral research in UT Southwestern Medical Center, Texas, USA for four years. He began his academic career as an assistant professor at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (A Central University) in Lucknow, India. His research interests are focused on the development of novel and efficient synthetic methodologies for the synthesis of value-added nitrogen and oxygen-containing compounds.
Dr Saroj R. De received his BSc degree in Chem. (Hons) in 2001 from Midnapore College and MSc in 2003 in Organic Chemistry from Vidyasagar University. In 2004, he joined PhD at IIT Kharagpur under the supervision of Prof. Dipakranjan Mal. After obtaining his PhD in 2009, he moved to University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre, Dallas, Texas, USA for his postdoctoral research. Currently, he is working as Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Chemistry, National Institute of Technology, Uttarakhand. His current research is focused on the total synthesis of bioactive natural products, development of novel methodologies, and transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation reactions.
Ms Saumya Verma was born in 1995 in Uttar Pradesh, India. She completed her BSc degree from Banaras Hindu University (Varanasi) in 2015 and Master of Science in Chemistry from Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow in 2017. She received INSPIRE Scholarship from BSc to MSc and was awarded Gold medal for securing the first position in MSc. In 2017, she joined the PhD program as CSIR-JRF under the guidance of Dr Jawahar L. Jat in the Department of Chemistry, BBAU, Lucknow. Her research interest is focused on the development of novel sustainable synthetic methodologies.
