Summary:To the Editor: The review of The Management of AIDS Patients (Sept. 4 issue) 1 begins with a question: "Was it Sir William Osler who said, 'Know typhoid and all things clinical will be added unto you?'" The answer, alas, is no. Sir William said, "Know syphilis in all its manifestations and relations, and all other things clinical will be added unto you." 2 It is not surprising that Osler was misquoted. Bean, in the introduction to his father's splendid collection of Osler's aphorisms, says, "Even a cursory survey of Osler's writings discloses a wealth of epigrams — the self-sufficient epitome in . . . No extract is available for articles shorter than 400 words.
