Summary:Optical fibre sensors are used to measure various physical, chemical, biochemical and biomedical parameters. Phase or intensity modulation is used as a mechanism by which information to be measured is transmitted into the light guided within the fibre. An intensity modulation technique responsible for sensing thermally stimulated discharge current (TSDC) is used. The depolarisation causes mechanical displacement which, in turn, produces a direct intensity modulation. Microbending is one mechanism of intensity modulation and constitutes an intrinsic type of sensor where the modulation takes place within the fibre. It can be inferred from the preliminary results that optical fibres may be used as a tool to study polarisation properties of polymer-ceramic composites. 8 refs.
