| Abstract | Blood investigations may reveal elevated alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, collagen metabolites, and urinary hydroxyproline with normal levels of serum calcium, parathyroid hormone, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. Individuals with extensive polyostotic FD may have hypophosphatemia, hyperphosphaturia, and osteomalacia (2). Conventional 3-phase bone scans in FD show hyperemia, increased blood pool, and tracer uptake in the delayed cortical phase secondary to the high bone turnover associated with immature woven bone. Adult patients with FD can be treated with parenteral or oral bisphosphonates, which will significantly reduce pain and bone turnover and improve the quality of life in majority of subjects. |
