Summary:Whole and broken Bacillus subtilis bacteria were studied by shall-angle X ray scattering in the region from 3–18 milliradians, to investigate the condition of ribosomes in whole bacteria. The scattering curves for the whole bacteria were of lower intensity than those for the broken bacteria, but most of the difference appears to be due to changes of interparticle interference of protein and ribosomes when the cell contents are diluted upon rupture of the bacteria. Scattering, studies on solutions of ribosomes and bovine plasma albumin mixed together showed similar behavior of the scattering patterns upon dilution.
