Summary: | Changes in the color and optical properties of 21 posterior composites caused by accelerated aging were determined from reflection spectrophotometric data and Kubelka's equations. Samples were aged for 300 h at 43°C and 90% relative humidity, intermittent water spray, and continuous exposure to a 2500 W xenon light. After aging, the composites were generally lighter, less chromatic, and more opaque. The optical constants S and K generally increased. When compared to anterior composites tested previously, the posterior composites were typically darker and less chromatic but similar in opacity. The greater changes in color and optical properties of the fine-particle and blended composites compared to the microfilled composites may be the result of greater light scattering of the former materials after surface erosion. |
