Summary:Vertical integration within agricultural and food sectors is one of the decisive factors influencing market structure and competitiveness of agriculture. The article analyses and methodologically specifies these motives for vertical integration and determines possibilities of quantification of the effects of vertical integration. In order to quantify the effects of vertical integration various indexes are used in empirical studies. The most often used, i.e. added value/total sale, value of stocks/total sale, and total purchase or transfers between firms/total volumes of used inputs are discussed.
