Summary:Abstract This paper presents the state-of-the-art literature on Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antennas for 5G systems. The degree of freedom offered by MIMO as a result of increasing transmitter and receiver elements has raised serious concern towards the impact due to mutual coupling between the adjacent elements in the MIMO antenna. Hence, this paper summarizes the various measures for suppressing mutual coupling between MIMO antenna elements. It also reports the methods for enhancing the bandwidth at the sub 6 GHz band by the deployment of different radiating structures and their influence over the crucial MIMO parameters. A study on the ways and means of handling the propagation losses at mm-wave frequencies by proper choice of PCB for fabrication is also discussed.
