Summary: | Allergic contact dermatitis occurs with increasing incidence and is a common environmental health problem. The undesirable immune response is triggered by small molecules denoted as haptens. Known haptens are synthetic or natural compounds that are present in everyday items like cosmetics or textiles. Certain compounds (‘superhaptens’) are of particular importance because of their outstanding immunogenic potential. In this article, the processes underlying such hypersensitivities are summarized and therapeutic options will be discussed. |
