Summary: | A new polymeric peroxide, poly [ (2, 5-dimethylhexane-2, 5-diperoxy) cyclohexanedicarboxylate] (1), was synthesized by condensation of cyclohexanedicarbonyl dichloride and 2, 5-dimethylhexane-2, 5-dihydroperoxide. The thermal decomposition of 1 in cumene was first order and the half life temperature of ten hours (T10) was about 80°C. It was higher than those of conventional polymeric diacyl peroxides (T10=60-65°C). Copolymerizations of styrene/ α-methylstyrene and styrene/α-methylstyrene/acrylonitrile with 1 were carried out at 90°C. 1 exhibited higher activity than conventional polymeric diacyl peroxides, and gave high molecular weight copolymers. Furthermore, the mechanical strength and heat-resistance of the copolymers were considerably improved. |
