Iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis in a patient treated with glue and lipiodised oil for pelvic congestion syndrome

On examination the patient was generally unwell; her blood pressure was 132/70 mm Hg, her pulse was 97 beats per min, and her BMI was 20·7 kg/m2. 123Iodine thyroid scintigraphy showed no significant uptake with a blunted measured value of 0·4% at 120 min (average value 12% at 120 min for a mean TSH...

Summary:On examination the patient was generally unwell; her blood pressure was 132/70 mm Hg, her pulse was 97 beats per min, and her BMI was 20·7 kg/m2. 123Iodine thyroid scintigraphy showed no significant uptake with a blunted measured value of 0·4% at 120 min (average value 12% at 120 min for a mean TSH of 1·2 mIU/L in France; appendix). Interestingly, a study proposed a cutoff level of 117 HU for the density of the thyroid seen on unenhanced CT scan to distinguish patients with amiodarone-induced hyperthyroidism from healthy controls and from euthyroid amiodarone-treated patients (appendix).
