Description of paralarval giant squid Architeuthis dux (Cephalopoda: Architeuthidae), with comments on ontogenetic shifts in morphology and habitat

Five paralarval (mantle length 6.7–8.8 mm) giant squid Architeuthis dux Steenstrup, 1857 are reported from New Zealand waters. The morphology of these paralarvae, the smallest thus far described, is compared with that reported for other known juveniles of this species and, in a more limited way, adu...

Summary:Five paralarval (mantle length 6.7–8.8 mm) giant squid Architeuthis dux Steenstrup, 1857 are reported from New Zealand waters. The morphology of these paralarvae, the smallest thus far described, is compared with that reported for other known juveniles of this species and, in a more limited way, adults. Former records of paralarvae and juveniles are critically re-evaluated, and comments regarding ontogenetic variation and habitat shifts in the life cycle of this species are made.
