Summary: | Elections come and go like ships on the Kiel Canal. Some are memorable, others decidedly less so. The Finnish general election on April 14 2019 comes into the former category. The campaign was dominated by the need for action on climate change rather than the usual bread‐and‐butter economic issues. The Social Democrats became the leading party for the first time in two decades but none of the three largest parties managed 18 per cent of the vote and they were separated by less than a single percentage point. |
