Summary:Urbanization practices that ignore the social dimension cause transformation and standardization of the lifestyles of the societies, destroy the cultural values produced throughout history, and trivialize the natural landscape values perception of local people over time. This study aims to determine how urban change effects the place attachment of people in a purposively chosen case of two districts which have similar historical landscape values one of which is well protected in terms of natural landscape values (Pınarbaşı district) while the other one (Kastamonu city center) has changed significantly in recent years. Therefore, the urban change since 1985 in two case areas was analyzed using remote sensing techniques via satellite images and the change of urbanized area was calculated. Additionally, a face to face questionnaire was conducted to determine the place attachment rates with 823 people 411 of which are living in Kastamonu city center and 412 of the respondents are living in Pınarbaşı district. As a result of the analysis of the whole data gathered within the scope of the study, it was determined that people who live in less urbanized areas are more attached than those who live in city center and demographical characteristics such as age, gender, and home ownership are also effective factors on place attachment level of respondents. Distinctly from former studies, it was determined that the statistical relationship between satisfaction of residence location and place attachment is stronger ( r =0.67) than the statistical relationship between residence length and place attachment ( r =0.42).
