Summary:•β-MnO2 nanolayer coated on carbon cloth (MnO2@CC) was synthesized for aqueous Zn-MnO2 battery.•The battery demonstrates good electrochemical performance.•The excellent performance is attributed to its unique structure. A β-MnO2 nanolayer coated on carbon cloth (MnO2@CC) was prepared for aqueous Zn-MnO2 battery. The MnO2@CC cathode demonstrates good electrochemical performance, including high specific capacity (326 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1) and excellent long term cycling performance (90–100 mA h g−1 at 2000 mA g−1 for 700 cycles). The excellent performance is attributed to its unique structure: the outer surface of β-MnO2 nanolayer is fully in contact with the electrolyte and the inner surface is closely combined with the conductive carbon cloth.
