Summary: | UV spectroscopy demonstrated formation of a complex of iodine with vinylpyrrolidone and butyl methacrylate in nonpolar ethanol medium. This complex is soluble in alcohol and insoluble in water. Application of an alcohol solution of the complex to a wound surface results in formation of a water-impermeable film with antimicrobial properties facilitating wound healing. The antimicrobial coating lasts for 1–3 days. Use of the Iodpolycom iodine polymer coating makes it possible to abandon gauze bandages. It also reduces suppurative complications from 34 to 5% relative to control. The Iodpolycom complex is commercially available. |
