Summary:In this Highlight article, we review recent progress in the application to nanoparticles for hydrogen generation. We focus primarily on reactive nanoparticles that produce hydrogen through chemical reaction and nanoparticle catalysts that promote hydrogen release from high hydrogen content materials. The area of nanoparticle photocatalysts is briefly mentioned for completeness. To facilitate comparison of the various approaches, we report mass normalized hydrogen generation rates for the papers reviewed. These values are determined using the reported experimental data.
