Summary:Due to the difficulty in collecting accurate circuit power consumption parameters in practical communication systems, this letter investigates energy efficiency (EE) optimization with no knowledge of the circuit power consumption in massive MIMO systems. First, the influence of the imperfect estimation of circuit power consumption on the EE optimization is analyzed. It reveals that the EE optimization is insensitive to the imperfect circuit power consumption provided that the estimation error is not too large. Accordingly, we propose a simple EE optimization method for massive MIMO systems, in which the base station is unaware of the circuit power consumption parameters. Through the proposed scheme, the EE loss due to imperfect circuit power consumption parameters asymptotically tends to zero as the number of transmit antennas increases without bound. Simulation results validate that the proposed method can provide an EE performance very close to the optimal scheme with accurate circuit power consumption parameters.
