Relation of the external mechanical stress to the properties of piezoelectric materials for energy harvesting

We investigated the piezoelectric properties and the generation of voltage and power under the mechanical compressive loads for three types of piezoelectric ceramics 0.2Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -0.8Pb(Zr 0.475 Ti 0.525 )O 3 (soft-PZT), 0.1Pb(Mg 1/3 Sb 2/3 )O 3 - 0.9Pb(Zr 0.475 Ti 0.525 )O 3 (hard-PZT)...

Summary:We investigated the piezoelectric properties and the generation of voltage and power under the mechanical compressive loads for three types of piezoelectric ceramics 0.2Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -0.8Pb(Zr 0.475 Ti 0.525 )O 3 (soft-PZT), 0.1Pb(Mg 1/3 Sb 2/3 )O 3 - 0.9Pb(Zr 0.475 Ti 0.525 )O 3 (hard-PZT) and [0.675Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -0.35PbTiO 3 ]+5 wt% BaTiO 3 (textured-PMNT). The piezoelectric d 33 coefficients of all specimens increased with increasing compressive load. The generated voltage and power showed a linear relation and square relation to the applied stress, respectively. These results were larger than those calculated using the simple piezoelectric equation due to the non-linear characteristics of the ceramics, so they were evaluated with a simple model based on a non-linear relation.
