Summary:The analytical methods for the test of pilocarpine in hair tonics were established by means of ion exchange methods, ultraviolet absorption spectra, precipitation reactions, color reactions and paper chromatography. Attempts to eluate the pilocarpine with N-HCl from the Amberlite IR-120 or Dowex 50 X-2 were unsuccessful, but suitable results were obtained from Dowex 50 X-1 (closslinking 1). Limits of identification of these methods are from 1.52 to 6.25 mg % of pilocarpine in the samples.
