Summary: | While ethnicity is generally considered to be inherent in human nature, a growing awareness is emerging of the significance of class for the study of ethnicity. Ethnicity & class represent two competing bases for attachment among people. Five class theories of ethnicity are contrasted: nation-building, superexploitation, split labor market, middleman minorities, & national liberation. On the basis of these theories, an integrated approach to class & ethnic relations brought about by imperialism is proposed. Some applications to the present world are suggested. 3 Figures. W. H.
