Summary: | A technique is described to study the critical stress intensity factor (SIF) under dynamic pressure loading. A pressure vessel with the specimen enclosed is sealed with a membrane which is broken to produce a pressure wave. The blast wave produced is planar and reproducable. Data generated is analyzed with Bergvist's equation and is consistent with that of other researchers in the field. The technique is reported to produce a more representative model of the actual crack propagation event. Strain gages are used to follow the strain relationships to the pressure wave. |
