Summary:The uncertainty in the determination of the normal to magnetohydrodynamic discontinuities, connected with application of the so-called 'least-squares' method for magnetic field experimental data, is analyzed. A system of possible cases and corresponding necessary conditions is constructed. It is shown that in the general case the determination of the type of the discontinuity and the normal vector is impossible without some further information. The error in the determination of the normal vector is considered and a scheme for its estimation is proposed. Two definite effects of shock waves in the interplanetary plasma are considered as an illustration of the proposed method.
