Summary:Real-time image processing is a powerful tool to extract useful information from a dynamic environment (obstacle detection, path following, etc.). However, low-level image processing deals with big amounts of data and intensive computations, and may constitute an undesirable time consuming task for realtime systems. Smart cameras can solve it by using embedded processing resources to achieve low-level vision tasks, before data transmission to the host system. In this paper, a FPGA-based smart camera is presented, and an embedded tracking algorithm is shown as an application example.
