Summary: | When carrying out en route surveys, where a sample of travellers is interviewed while travelling, the population is unknown. En route surveys, therefore, entail special problems for developing a sampling procedure and for calculating the uncertainty of the results. In this project some difficulties faced when carrying out border surveys are discussed. Data are mainly from automatic counts of traffic and manual recording of registration numbers carried out for several years at Svinesund, the main road crossing for tourists travelling by car to Norway. The variations in volume and composition of traffic through the day, between different days of the week and between seasons have been analysed with the objective of developing an optimal sampling procedure, i.e. a procedure that gives the most precise estimates possible with the least cost. |
