Summary: | Bismuth titanate Bi12TiO20 is one of the silenite compounds with the general formula Bi12MO20 where M represents a teravalent ion or a combination of ions, which give an average charge of 4+. Current applications of Bi12TiO20 are mainly in the fields of processing optical information due to a forunate combination of electro-optic, acousto-optic, and piezoelectric properties. In comparison with other sillenites (such as Bi12GeO20, Bi12SiO20 etc.), Bi12TiO20 crystals exhibit a higher sensitivity for red light and have a lower optical activity Q, which is favorable for many applications. |
