Summary:To measure and monitor the radioactivity of both pure beta and mixed gamma and beta emitting isotopes down to the maximum permitted concentrations in liquids, a beta monitor was designed. Based on large area, thin window geiger-mueller tubes, and a digital ratemeter the minimum detectable concentration of 90Sr - 90Y in water was less than 1 pCi/ml with the monitor. Window effects, response time, statistical accuracy, decontamination and alarms are discussed.
