Summary:Offshore structures are continuously subjected to vibrations from one or more environmental loads. These vibrations cause many serviceability issues ranging from crew discomfort and reduced productivity to even platform collapse due to fatigue. This has led to the development of several techniques for vibration control of offshore structures. Amongst them, passive vibration control techniques are reliable in the harsh marine environment, and relatively simple and economic, in comparison to active and semi-active control measures. Consequently, extensive research has been carried out on the application of passive vibration control techniques in offshore structures, with several new concepts emerging recently. However, current literature lacks a dedicated and comprehensive review on this subject. The current work aims to fill this research gap by presenting a survey of various passive control methods explored for mitigating vibrations in different offshore structures, including jacket platforms, jack-up platforms, tension leg platforms, spar structures, floating production storage and offloading vessels, and semi-submersibles, among others. It emphasizes the strengths and weaknesses of each passive control technique, with specific attention to its suitability to diverse offshore structure types. Future directions of research are also identified. •Detailed review of passive vibration control of offshore structures presented.•All types of platforms except wind turbine supporting systems covered.•Basic principles and application of different passive devices discussed.•Future research scope in passive vibration control of offshore structures listed.
