Summary:This letter reports a systematic study of the formation characteristics of different alumina phases on thermal decomposition of boehmite using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The phases formed were further compared using XRD data. A good correlation was obtained in this study between the two. FTIR appears to be an effective and easier tool in the characterization of the dehydroxylation behavior of boehmite precursor gels.
