Summary:Society's reasons for supporting R&D are changing with the emphasis on domestic problems. The emphasis is now on applied interdisciplinary res, & the demand is that the U's do more of this. Problems that arise for the U from this demand are investigated. A number of U responses are investigated. The most fruitful approach is seen in a response by U consortia. Various patterns of consorted responses are suggested, & their individual difficulties are discussed. Finally, the difficulties of effectively communicating res results to decisionmakers is investigated & recommendations are made. AA.
