Summary:Michelia retusa (Magnoliaceae), a critically endangered new species from Hainan, China is described. This species is similar to M. yunnanensis, but differs from the latter in having obovate‐oblong, elliptic, obovate or obcordate leaf blades with usually emarginated apexes, petioles without a stipular scar and flowers with smaller outer tepals, longer stamens and glabrous carpels.
