Summary:ABSTRACT In this article, a new approach was proposed to tune the operation band of a waveguide antenna over 4 GHz. By loading an elaborately designed metasurface, the standing‐wave field in the waveguide was switched to a new distribution. This could shift the operation band to a new one. A sample antenna integrated with the metasurface was manufactured and measured. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate that using abrupt reflection phases to control the antenna operation band is an effective approach. Also, the tuning method proposed here can be applied to other antennas to achieve higher tunability. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 59:1218–1222, 2017
