Summary: | Being part of history themselves, literary histories are structured by forces that can all too easily escape scrutiny. Academic circuits of exchange shape methodologies and modes of representation, and the sense of an audience can be as much a matter of scholarly rigor as of hopeful marketing. In such a situation blame and defensiveness are as endemic as they are sterile. The following reflection aims to clarify a representation of South African Anglophone literature that remains enveloped by its present. |
