Summary:An analytical model is proposed for periodic matrix cracking in α°-layers of symmetric composite laminates. The coupling effects between tensile and shear stresses are taken into account. The analysis uses a quadratic displacement distribution in the thickness direction in each layer and the interlaminar-shear-stress stiffness matrix, proposed by Tsai, Daniel and Lee (1990). An analytical solution has been obtained for a general case of angle α with allowance for the appropriate boundary conditions at the crack surfaces. Numerical examples demonstrate the implementation of the method for calculating stress distribution in layers between two neighbouring cracks.
