Summary:•We synthesized the red-emitting Ba1.982ZnS3:0.018Eu phosphor.•The zero phonon line energy, Stokes shift, and red shift were measured.•The feasibility of the phosphor-converted LED was examined. Ba2(1−x)ZnS3:2xEu (x = 0.001, 0.003, 0.005, 0.007, 0.009, and 0.011) were synthesized via a solid-state reaction. An assessment of the optimal reaction temperature and composition of the activator Eu2+ ion (x) revealed that the brightest emission was obtained from the Ba1.982ZnS3:0.018Eu prepared at 900 °C. Because Ba1.982ZnS3:0.018Eu exhibits broad absorption and emission bands at ∼475 and ∼650 nm, respectively, it is a good candidate for red-emitting phosphors excited by blue light-emitting diodes. Furthermore, zero-phonon line energy, Stokes shift, and redshift were also calculated.
