Upgrading of the XTU tandem

Summary:The LNL XTU tandem has been upgraded replacing the 72 in. accelerating tubes with longer ones, whose lengths are: no. 1, 96 in., nos. 2–8, 88 in. A separate voltage divider on column and tubes, based on a new design from Letournel, has been installed. The total generator has been conditioned up to 16.5 MV and has been tested up to 16 MV with proton beam and routinely used up to 15.5 MV with heavy ion beams. All the upgrading has up to now performed satisfactorily without major troubles.
